Knowledge Transfer between Academia and Creative Practice: My Journey from a Dancer to Dance Scholar and Editor of Dance Central
As a guest lecturer for Theatre 104 at the University of the Philippines Diliman, I explored the intersections of academic training and creative practice, drawing from my experiences as a movement practitioner, scholar, and editor. I shared my journey from dancer to editor of Dance Central, a role I took on at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020. Unlike a traditional dance magazine, Dance Central is an online quarterly publication featuring in-depth interviews with dance artists. Produced by The Dance Centre, British Columbia’s primary resource hub for dance, the publication has evolved from a members-only newsletter into a dynamic intellectual platform for critical conversations on dance.
In my lecture, I examined the challenges of translating embodied practice into words—how do we engage dancers in meaningful discussions about their artistic processes? How do we bridge the gap between academia and creative practice? I also addressed the complexities of digital publishing, navigating electronic platforms, and leveraging social media for broader dissemination.
